Masina won awards at Cannes and the Oscars for this – her finest – performance as the eternally hopeful, life-loving prostitute Cabiria, untouched by cynicism about life and men, no matter how much evidence she collects to the contrary. The interplay between camerawork, editing, on-screen movement and music are breathtaking.
