Join artists Emelia Hewitt and Deborah Makinde alongside Artistic Manager Katherine Long for a tour of the artworks from Venture Arts selected as part of the Manchester Open Exhibition. Venture Arts is an award-winning visual arts charity supporting people with learning disabilities to reach their full potential through arts and culture. Venture Arts have a total of 16 artists in the exhibition.

The tour will take place during the Relaxed Viewing Hours. More info here.

Emelia Hewitt
Emelia is an exciting emerging artist based at Venture Arts with a strong practice using intricate and innovative photographic methods, manipulating digital and analogue images and narratives.  Emelia records small instances of life and skewers serious photography with comical feeling.  Dog Building is a perfect example of this, mixing Emelia’s black and white photography with an image of her pet cockapoo, Ollie, who in the piece appears to have energetically climbed to the top of the building… when in real life he is actually very lazy!

Deborah Makinde
Deborah Makinde is a mixed media artist who takes inspiration from many places including scenes and characters from her favourite films and musicals and also her Ghanaian and Nigerian heritage. During the pandemic Deborah and her mum both contracted COVID and sadly her mum passed away.  My Mum from Ghana is a terracotta portrait of Deborah’s mum Marianne, influenced by the Ghanaian Akan tradition of making a memorial head of the deceased.

Katherine Long
Katherine is the Artistic Manager at Venture Arts where she has worked for the past 17 years. She is a pioneer in the sector with a particular commitment to supporting individual artists to build their careers and amplify their voices within culture.  She has devised and produced a range of artistic programmes, managed the studio artists and programme, curated exhibitions across the UK and supported artists to show their work nationally and internationally.
