Chadha’s highly personal project is a work that deals with complex issues and ideas within the format of a popular, audience-pleasing romance. Set, as the title suggests, in the Viceroy’s house where upstairs politicians plan the Partition of India, a romance is blossoming between a couple of servants below – one Hindu and one Muslim. In Viceroy’s House Chadha manages to deftly both inform, educate and entertain, whilst at all time keeping the personal impact of Partition in the audiences mind.
