La Chureca is the biggest open-air landfill in Nicaragua, and home to those eking out an existence scavenging and selling what they can. 11-year-old María and her mother Lilibeth live on the edge of this immense rubbish dump. Their future depends on selling a litter of purebred puppies to a local thug, but when the deal goes awry, Lilibeth leaves her daughter in the relative safety of a friend’s recycling factory.
The days go by with no sign of her mother’s return; María feels abandoned, confused and angry. One night she meets Tadeo, a kind and romantic boy determined to help her find her mother. A compelling debut feature, with a magical realist twist as Lilibeth reappears as a panther-woman creature, encouraging her young daughter to channel her rage into power.
