The Innocents

Directed by Jack Clayton

One of the great British gothic chillers, The Innocents is also the best of the myriad Turn of the Screw film adaptations. Actress Deborah Kerr delivers a perfectly corseted performance as the repressed Victorian governess struggling with hysteria over the apparently ghostly possession of her young wards. Brooding design and haunting monochromatic camerawork by horror maestro Freddie Francis add to the heavy air of foreboding.
