Loosely based on Ismat Chughtai’s controversial short story ‘Lihaaf’ (The Quilt), Deepa Mehta’s seminal film is a powerful critique of patriarchy and one of the first Indian films to depict a lesbian relationship. It also stars Shabana Azmi, a major figure in Indian Parallel Cinema, and with a soundtrack by international film composer A. R. Rahman.
