Featuring cameos from Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock (amongst others), Bertrand Tavernier’s portrait of fictional saxophonist Dale Turner, regarded as a composite of Bud Powell and Lester Young, is powered by a towering lead performance from an Oscar-nominated Dexter Gordon. The film spawned two soundtracks, an official score by Hancock (Academy Award Winner) and Gordon’s The Other Side of Round Midnight, one of his last recordings.
