A trio of petty Roman thieves don priests’ clothing to con the local peasants out of their treasures. Here, wonderfully, is Fellini’s eye for the grotesque and strange within the mundane, the exuberant music, energetic camerawork, vivid yet subtle performances, but all shot through with a gritty, cynical bleakness.
