Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie’s Dead Aunt)

Directed by Monica Zanetti

17-year-old Ellie is struggling to find the courage to ask her classmate, Abbie, to the formal. Luckily, her Aunt Tara, a lesbian who died in the 80s has shown up as a ‘Fairy Godmother’ to dish out advice, whether Ellie wants it or not.

Lead actors Hawkshaw and Terakes are excellent as the young women embarking on a new and uncharted relationship: Ellie communicates her feelings openly and honestly and while Abbie is more ‘flawed’ and uncertain they navigate their relationship in a way that provides a positive road map on how to have healthy, productive relationships. Funny, heartfelt, beautifully acted and very well directed. This is the queer teen rom com that the world needs.
