The Cloud-Capped Star

Directed by Ritwik Ghatak

The Partition of India and director Ghatak’s separation from his homeland were a driving force in his life as a filmmaker, so it is most appropriate that we are screening two of his masterful works as part of our Partition weekend. Through its tale of Nita’s struggle to keep her refugee family afloat, The Cloud-Capped Star operates as a harsh criticism of the social and economic conditions that arose from Partition.

The Cloud-Capped Star is presented with thanks to the Ritwik Ghatak Memorial Trust and Sanghita Sen, University of St. Andrews.
