To celebrate the Year of the Rat, we screen Girls Always Happy, an engaging portrait of the often-tense relationship between mother and daughter, heralded by some as China’s answer to Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. The debut feature film of Yang Mingming, whose short film Female Directors was shown previously in Manchester by the Chinese Film Forum UK, Girls Always Happy deftly portrays the complexities of family relationships as they move between the extremes of animosity and affection.
