Samuel and Stelma/ Kim Thompson

The series ‘Samuel and Stelma’ began when Thompson visited the home of her recently departed grand-parents – first generation Jamaican immigrants who she had not visited for some time. Discovering old family photographs taken in the 60s and 70s, she was struck by how distant these half-known personalities seemed. The compositions and palette within this series evokes the allure, but also the impenetrable nature of these glimpses into past lives.

Thompson’s sources of inspiration are varied, though she is heavily influenced by the social etiquette and ritual of the everyday. Her style has developed into something quite personal – she is fascinated by the possibilities of line and mark-making, alongside the juxtaposition of unsaturated primary colours, often inspired by jarring combinations remembered from the Ladybird books of her childhood.
