HOME has a long and on-going commitment to screening films from East Asia, in particular those in Chinese languages. The cinema of Taiwan has always been a key part of this offer. Therefore, the opportunity to work with the Taipei Representative Office in the UK and the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan (R.O.C.) to bring a range of Taiwanese films to Manchester is one we just couldn’t turn down.
So, across 2023, join us for a series of films and events that reflect one of the world’s most vibrant and exciting production centres: in August discover Taiwanese New Wave classic Millennium Mambo , and delve into the Underworld Taiwan season, focusing on Taiwan cinema from the late 1970’s to early 1980’s.
In September, we will be bringing you The Early Works of Hou Hsiao-hsien with some bittersweet love stories. Our screenings of Cheerful Wind and Dust in the Wind are a sensation to watch on the big screen to see how Hou Hsian-hsien has developed his filmmaking prowess on his road to becoming the leading figure in Taiwan’s New Wave cinema movement.
