We will be joined by writer-director Daniela Féjerman for a Q&A following the screening on Sun 17 Apr.
Born in Argentina, Daniela Féjerman studied Psychology before becoming a playwright and television screenwriter. She first turned her hand to film scriptwriting with Patricia Ferreira’s award-winning debut Sé quién eres (2000), and she has since written and directed four features: A mi madre le gustan las mujeres (2002), Semen, una historia de amor (2005), 7 minutos (2009) and now L’adopció, which has been nominated for four Gaudí awards by the Catalan Film Academy. We are delighted to welcome Daniela back to Manchester after her last ¡Viva! visit in 2002.
When a Spanish couple travel to a country in Eastern Europe to adopt a young child, they find themselves mired in an murky system that seems to prey on their vulnerability. As the atmosphere becomes increasingly tense, their own latent conflicts come to the fore as the dream threatens to turn into a nightmare. Inspired by the writer-director’s personal experiences, this poignant film offers some surprising wry comic moments, and deals with an emotional topic without sentimentality. Acclaimed Catalan actors Navas and Garrido give great performances as the hopeful but increasingly paranoid couple.
