The Enlightened Live Stream

A ‘true’ crime story, unfolding online and in person, in the UK and India.

The Enlightened weaves a web of postcolonial mystery about a young, white man who went to India in search of enlightenment but disappeared without a trace. As friends, family, and internet sleuths fixate on a digital trail of breadcrumbs, inconvenient truths are uncovered, dangerous lies are exposed, and they’re all forced to ask: is the truth worth it?

True crime thriller meets internet deep-dive, The Enlightened tells a fictionalised story inspired by real-life cases. It invites the audience to participate in a collective meditation session that takes place between the physical, digital, and spiritual realms while exploring human connection and the need to make sense of chaos.

‘The Enlightened’ will be seen by audiences both in-person and online – the Friday and Saturday performances of the show can be streamed by audiences worldwide. All audience members will have the choice to be a part of a WhatsApp group chat as a part of the show experience.

This project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

I’ve never felt so connected as an audience before […] like a cult of conspiracy theorists

It’s hard not to be inspired by the ambition and the innovative approach of THE ENLIGHTENED. Pushing at the current limits of tech and live performance, the show has all the raw ingredients to attract the best type of audience – those curious at the possibilities of live theatre, hungry for new form and ideas.

David Byrne, Artistic Director at New Diorama Theatre

The Enlightened is brilliant. Formal innovation meets knotty subject matter to create a unique show that wormed inside my brain for ages after. I urge you to experience this.
