Manchester’s Queer Up North International Festival gets under way on Tuesday 12 May with the UK premiere of The Young Ladies Of… by American actor and performer Taylor Mac.
The Young Ladies Of… which runs until Saturday 16 May, is inspired by Taylor’s father, who, while stationed in Vietnam in 1968, placed a lonely hearts ad in an Australian newspaper asking for women to reply to this lonely serviceman. Hundreds of women replied, but the letters went unread as his father was killed in action.
The letters gathered dust for 30 years until Taylor’s mother found them and passed them on to her son, who, captivated by what stories behind them, decided to use them as the starting point for this show. To read an interview with Taylor Mac, please “click here… “:
