There are red suits and smeared make up, locked smiles and glum faces.
On a bare stage under bright light a troupe of hapless clowns do their unlevel best to get along and pass the time. Carefully unbalanced between funny and not funny Out Of Order is the ruins of a show in the ruins of a world. Violence and posturing, high jinx and clown on clown comical capers give way to bickering, exhaustion, hunger, melancholy and silence. The clock ticks. The music swells to repeated climax.
Out Of Order is a Forced Entertainment production. Co-produced by Künstlerhaus Mousonturm supported within the framework of the Alliance of International Production Houses by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media of Germany and Schauspiel Frankfurt, PACT Zollverein Essen, HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin and Gessnerallee Zurich.
★★★★ “Sweaty, sad and stupidly funny… Where it feels truly current is in its criticism of communication.. By pin-balling between childish hysteria and tumbleweed brutality, it mirrors our own absurdity; an uncommunicative society led by a bunch of clowns.” – The Guardian
★★★★ “Wry, melancholic… Director Tim Etchells orchestrates the chaos with restrained finesse… Evocatively reflects the alienating absurdity all around us.” – The Stage
Far more than its constituent parts… A largely compelling political allegory… An astute and sophisticated clown show.” – London Theatre1.Com
“Forced Entertainment’s clowns have forgotten their routine but are bound to try to do it anyway, just as we remain dutifully committed to our own pointless self-destruction… Poignant chaos.” – Exeunt
“Forced Entertainment deal beautifully with the nonsense of life.” Süddeutscher Zeitung
