Lama Jampa Thaye
Lama Jampa Thaye was born in Bolton, England, in 1952, and found himself drawn to Buddhism at a young age, departing from his Catholic upbringing. By 16, he was involved in the counterculture movement in London but soon realised its limitations, leading him to pursue deeper spiritual truths.
His commitment to Buddhism deepened when he met Karma Thinley Rinpoche, who eventually appointed him as a dharma-regent, authorising him to transmit the most complex forms of Buddhist meditation. Lama Jampa’s unique position as a Western-born lama, authorised by the heads of both the Sakya and Kagyu traditions, has made him a bridge between Eastern teachings and Western students.
With the encouragement of his masters he founded the Dechen community, establishing Buddhist centres across the West, where he shares authentic teachings grounded in traditional practice yet accessible to modern practitioners. Lama Jampa’s work extends globally, with his teachings reaching audiences through his books, international lectures and YouTube channel.
Despite his deep spiritual commitments, Lama Jampa raised a family, obtained a doctorate in Tibetan religious history and held a teaching position at the University of Manchester, before dedicating himself entirely to Buddhist teaching in 2001. His ability to combine traditional Buddhist wisdom with Western cultural understanding makes him a rare and respected figure in the world of Buddhism, fulfilling a unique role in bringing ancient teachings to contemporary seekers.
