We are offering a funded Short Film Commission to be shown as part of Horizons Festival 2025!
This opportunity is for artists based in Greater Manchester who have lived experience of displacement from their home country or seeking sanctuary through the UK asylum system.
HOME and CAN are commissioning a filmmaker to create a short documentary film (max 20 minutes) that showcases the Arts and Migration group; a group of individual artists who come together each year to curate Horizons Festival. The film will explore these artists, their experiences, artistic practice and how they work together as a collective.
The documentary needs to include:
- An interview with several artists from the group
- ‘Day in the life’ style footage of the artists working and creating
- Interviews with the festival producers at CAN and HOME
- A narrative thread tying the film together, this can be curated by the filmmaker
Your film must fit the values of the festival and will be specially screened at HOME during Horizons Festival. We ask that you respond to this year’s festival theme More in Common in your pitch for the commission. We encourage artists to use our explanation of the theme as a guideline and welcome you to interpret it as you wish – more detail about the theme and values can be found below.
Your film will be accompanied by either a panel discussion, a Q&A session or an introduction to contextualise your work. Other short films may also be screened which work well with your film.
This commission offers £1,000 of financial support. In order to apply, you must be aged 18+ and you must have the right to work in the UK. There is one commission available which will receive the following package of support:
- £1000 of funding (£500 in April, £500 in June)
- 2 – 4 days of advice and support from HOME’s Creative Development Practitioner during production in the form of regular meetings and executive producing support
- Ability to loan filmmaking equipment from HOME
- Screening at HOME’s Cinema on Sunday 15 June 2025
- Support with next steps
