Call out / Creative Interventions: The Red Shoes

A call for proposal from artists in Greater Manchester to respond creatively to the work of Powell and Pressburger by developing a small creative intervention in response to The Red Shoes.

We’re looking for four creative interventions to take place before screenings of the Powell and Pressburger seminal film The Red Shoes, which will return to the big screen in December.

All art forms and styles are welcome; the only rules are:

  • it must be no longer than five minutes (if a performance/durational)
  • the content will need to be in line with the certificate of the film (U)
  • the creative must live in Greater Manchester and be over 18

The fee is £250

Technical Specifications

  • The piece will be in our cinemas, most likely with screenings programmed before and after, so there will be very limited time to set up and take down any equipment.
  • The cinemas have fixed lighting and a carpeted floor
  • We advise that you work within the technical parameters of what we can offer easily: microphones and our computer, which you can use to project something on the cinema screen if you wish to (but you don’t have to).

Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger is a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. bfi.org.uk/powell-and-pressburger.

We imagine spoken word could work well in our cinema spaces but we are not the creatives, our imagination is limited! Surprise us :D

We advise that you work within the technical parameters of what we can offer easily: microphones and our computer, which you can use to project something on the cinema screen if you wish to (but you don’t have to).

There is no additional budget for equipment so this will have to work with what we already have or with your equipment, provided it is compatible with our system and can be set up and put away very quickly.

Your piece must be a maximum of 5 minutes.

The content of your piece must be in line with the certificate of the film which is U (Have a look at the BBFC website for more information about certificates and what they mean.)

If you have an idea that you think would work but doesn’t exactly fit within what is outlined above, need more information or would like to check anything regarding the technical constraints, please get in touch with our Artist Development team on artistdevelopment@homemcr.org

Of course. but remember the artist fee is £250 for the intervention so, depending how many of you there are, it may end up not be a fair pay package.

People who have come to watch The Red Shoes at HOME. They may or may not be aware that you will do a creative intervention ahead of their visit.

Our public is generally very open, curious and generous so we are sure they will give you a warm welcome!

You will get one rehearsal or tech run in the cinema you are in in the morning of your intervention.
