What is the Manchester Open?

The Manchester Open is an open-submission exhibition. People living in, or, based in the Greater Manchester region are eligible to apply and submit one artwork.

Following two highly successful exhibitions in 2020 and 2022, HOME is thrilled to bring back the Manchester Open in February 2024. Over two iterations, the Manchester Open has received 5000 applications, shown 1000 artworks and had 50,000 people stepping through our doors.

HOME welcomes entries from people of any level of experience, including established professionals, new and emerging talent, enthusiastic amateurs and first-time artists.

Where will the Manchester Open take place?

It will take place in the main gallery at HOME, Manchester’s centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film. HOME can be found in the heart of Manchester city centre on Tony Wilson Place, just off Whitworth Street West and a stone’s throw from Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink station. Since opening in 2015, HOME has welcomed over 4.5 million visitors to see thrilling theatre and dance shows, experience great independent films from across the world, experience new art in our galleries, relax in our café and browse our bookshop.

Who is eligible to submit work to the Manchester Open?

Anyone who lives in, or is based in Greater Manchester (i.e. you have a Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford or Wigan postcode).

If you do not have a permanent address or are experiencing unstable housing circumstances, please email manchesteropen@homemcr.org and we will advise you on the most appropriate postcode to use.

If you have access requirements, please contact manchesteropen@homemcr.org or call us on 0161 212 3506.

Are there any age restrictions on who can submit?

To submit an entry yourself you must be aged 18 or over. Children under 18 years may enter, but their work must be submitted by a parent or guardian on their behalf.

Do you need a proof of address?

We require a valid postcode within the Greater Manchester region for you to proceed through the online application process. We trust that you are providing the correct information. If your submitted artwork is chosen to appear in the exhibition, you may be called upon to discuss your location in a broader context, such as a conversation about your practice, or in a local news item.

When is the deadline for submission?

The deadline for uploading entry submission is 23:59 on Sun 1 Oct 2023.

What are the dates of the exhibition?

The exhibition will run from Sat 3 February to Sun 28 April 2024.

Will the exhibition be free for the public to attend?

Yes, the Manchester Open exhibition is free to attend but we do have an optional donation for all visitors entering the gallery.

As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of our members, supporters, trusts and foundations to help us to bring our work to life, share it with the widest possible audience and keep our ticket prices affordable. In addition to ticket income and other funding we need to raise over £650,000 every year.

Your support makes it possible for us to create a HOME for people of all ages and backgrounds, including the communities on our doorstep and Manchester’s next generation of creative talent.

What type of works are being shown in the exhibition?

The categories are as follows:

  • Painting and Print
  • Illustration and Drawing
  • Photography
  • Audio/Visual/Moving Image
  • Sculpture and Installation
  • Digital and Mixed Media

Note:

The exhibition is a ‘salon hang’, which means that work is shown in close proximity to each other. No separate rooms or blank walls are available for a single work.

Selected audio/visual work, such as short film, will be presented on a loop with other artists’ works, sharing a monitor. Headphones will be provided with all screens.

HOME is committed to full captioning of audio/visual work.

Smaller sculptures will be presented on group plinths or tables, to limit multiple plinths and obstructions, and ensure wheelchair access is not impaired.

Will everything that’s submitted be shown in the exhibition?

No. Submissions will be reviewed by the Manchester Open selection panel who make the final selection of work for the exhibition. They consider many factors in their choices, including the overall balance, the type of work submitted, scale/duration, impact on surrounding work (e.g. amplified audio) and artistic intention.

How many works do you expect to show?

We will be presenting 400+ works of art in the main gallery.

Who is on the selection panel?

The selection panel will be announced in Autumn.

Are there any restrictions on the type of work I can submit?

Work must have been made since January 2022. The work must be complete (not a proposal) and original.

Please see Terms & Conditions for further details regarding restrictions upon size, type, duration and materials.

How much does it cost to submit?

There is no charge to submit your artwork, but a ‘pay what you can’ voluntary donation of £5 or other amount is strongly encouraged. All donations will be used to support HOME’s charitable aims.

Why does HOME need to encourage donations?

As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of our members, supporters, trusts and foundations to help us to bring our work to life, share it with the widest possible audience and keep our ticket prices affordable. In addition to ticket income and other funding we need to raise over £650,000 every year.

Your support makes it possible for us to create a HOME for people of all ages and backgrounds, including the communities on our doorstep and Manchester’s next generation of creative talent.

Can I submit applications on behalf of other artists?

Yes, you can submit on behalf of other artists, if you work for a community organisation and are working with artist-participants. Please submit one application per artist. Enter the artist’s name in the ‘Artist Information’ section and your name and contact email address in the ‘Contact Information’ box. Then enter the name of your community organisation in the ‘Group Name’ box. Please note, future correspondence will be via email, including whether the work has been selected.

How many works can I submit?

Each individual artist or creative can submit one artwork.

If you are submitting work on behalf of a group, you can submit one work per person.

Will the selection panel know if I have made a donation?

No, the selection panel will not know if or how much you have donated. This information is kept private and is not recorded against your entry.

Are there prizes or an overall winner?

There will be 5 Manchester Open Awards:

Three Professional Development Awards (£2k budget each) in partnership with Castlefield Gallery. All awards are granted as part of an artist development package. Each artist will receive bespoke support to help them develop their practice including research, materials, skills training, website, travel, artist residencies, or to support the production of new work.

One HOME Award (£2k budget) for an artist’s solo exhibition in the Granada Foundation Galleries focusing on developing new work, including in kind support and one-to-one mentoring with HOME’s Artist Development Producer.

One Manchester Open People’s Choice Award (£1k) that will be chosen by exhibition visitors, who will be able to vote for three works.

Will the artwork be for sale?

Artists and creatives taking part in the exhibition can decide if they would like to make their artwork available for sale. Artwork for sale can be purchased from HOME during the run of the exhibition but can only be collected when the exhibition closes. HOME retains 30 % (+VAT) commission to cover administrative costs. Please bear in mind the price you provide on your application is inclusive of the commission + VAT.

How much should I charge for my work?

Please see the document Guide to Pricing Your Work for Sale.
The previous Manchester Open in 2022 generated over £20,000 in sales, the vast majority being below £250.

Do I have to sell my work? I don’t want to.

No, you do not have to sell your work if you don’t want to. This is entirely optional.

I have a question that is not answered above, or I am having trouble with the application process.

Contact manchesteropen@homemcr.org and we will get back to you in due course. For any access requirements please call us on 0161 212 3506.

Please note we are a small team and may not have capacity to check emails daily Thank you for your patience.

This document provides a guide on how best to photograph your artwork for your submission.

Tips on photographing your artwork

  • It is important that your image is clear, not distorted, without filter and that the artwork is photographed against a neutral background, is well lit and without reflection. Use the best camera you can, a smart phone or tablet is fine. Make sure the whole artwork is in the frame.
  • With smaller pieces, where there is no surface texture, you could use a desktop scanner.
  • The file size of your submitted image should not exceed 20MB and should be at least 96dpi.
  • Images must be submitted in one of the following formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG.

How many photographs should I upload?

2 dimensional work: please upload a primary image showing the work in its entirety. If you think it will help the selection panel you can upload a second image to show a detailed section.

3 dimensional work: you should submit a primary image showing the work in its entirety and 1 or 2 additional images showing the work from different angles.

If you have access requirements, please contact manchesteropen@homemcr.org or 0161 212 3506 to discuss.

This document provides some tips on how to price your artwork, and information on how the sales process works, including how much commission HOME will take.

Tips on pricing your artwork

  • First things first…only put your artwork on sale if you want it to sell! If not, select ‘not for sale’.
  • Have you sold work before? If so, your work will already have a market value.
  • Don’t overprice your work. If you require £10,000, it is unlikely to sell in this context.
  • If this is your first time selling your work, it is important to consider the time taken to create your work, the price of the materials used and if relevant, the cost of any framing.
  • Ask yourself what you would be happy to pay for a similar work if you were buying it for yourself.
  • While there will certainly be collectors visiting the exhibition, the vast majority will be those who will see a work they wish to live with, in a home environment, so their budget is likely to reflect this (in the region of £50 – £250).
  • Previous Manchester Open exhibitions saw huge demand from the public for the purchase of work, raising in excess of £20,000 per exhibition. However, the vast majority of these – over 90% – were for work below a £300 maximum cap.

Selling your work through HOME

  • HOME will facilitate sales of artwork during the Manchester Open.
  • Artworks will need to be paid for in full. There are no finance options.
  • When someone wishes to purchase a work, they will need to enquire at box office providing the artwork number from the Manchester Open Guide.
  • Our box office staff will take a payment in full and cross the work off a sales-list. A red dot (sticker) will be placed by the work in the gallery to indicate the work has sold.
  • We cannot manage the sale of multiple editions.
  • Artworks will be available for collection when the exhibition closes. HOME does not offer a delivery service and the work will need to be collected in person.
  • HOME retains 30% (+VAT) commission to cover administrative costs. Please bear in mind the price you provide on your application is inclusive of the commission. E.g. something that is priced £150 in total, breaks down as follows: 30% commission (£45) + VAT 20% (£9) = £54. So the Artist will be paid £96. The VAT is only applicable to the commission.
  • Should the receipt of funds be problematic for any reason, or you do not have a bank account, we will assist where possible with alternative means of reimbursement.

For further information, please email manchesteropen@homemcr.org with your query and a member of the team will get back to you when available. Please be patient, as we are a small team.

Each of the parties agree that it has not entered into these Terms in reliance on any representation, warranty, undertaking or other statement, expressed or implied, orally or in writing, given or made by or on behalf of the other party except in so far as contained in these Terms. This clause shall not apply to any representation, warranty, undertaking or statement made fraudulently or which was induced by fraud.
