Yanks (1979)

Director: John Schlesinger/Actors: Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Gere, William Devane

Set in the period of 1944 leading up to the Normandy landings, Yanks examines the cultural differences and romantic entanglements between a troop of US soldiers stationed in the UK and their hosts in a small Northern town.

Three very different women find themselves attracted to the American G.I.s stationed at new military base in town – but their attachments are complicated by spouses living and fighting far from home, and emerging tensions between the American troops and the locals.

In Yanks, writer Collin Welland shifts focus far from the front lines and crafts a story of World War II that combines epic sweep, intimate observations and emotional heft.

This screening will be preceded by The Barber, a short film by Dhivya Kate Chetty.
