Women in Spanish Cinema: Cortos en femenino + post-screening discussion

This event features three award-winning films from Cortos en Femenino, an annual programme that showcases short films made by women in Spain.  The films address issues such as gender identity, migration policies and functional diversity, highlighting the value of cinematographic language to feminist activism.

Oro rojo  

(Red Gold)

Dir Carme Gomila/ES 2021/12 mins/ Spanish wEngST

This animated short film presents the stories of three Moroccan immigrant women working in the fields of Huelva, encompassing themes such as environmental exploitation, racism, and capitalism. The film received a Special Mention from the Jury at Interfilm Berlin – International Short Film Festival.

 

Escamas

Dir Katherina Harder/ES 2020/17 mins/ Spanish wEngST

Director, Katherina Harder, delves into contemporary ideas of representation and its meanings. The film presents highly human characters, women with insecurities and tensions, who collide and then unite through healing and freedom. Escamas has received numerous awards, including Best International Short Film at the AMOR (Chile) and Cine las Américas (USA) festivals.

 

Sorda  

(Deaf)

Dir Eva Libertad and Nuria Muñoz /ES 2021/21 mins/ Spanish wEngST

Sorda  follows the personal conflict of its protagonist, played by the deaf actress Miriam Garlo (Eva Libertad’s sister). The filmmakers play with sound and hearing, making both elements integral to the story. This was the first sign language short film to receive a nomination for Spain’s Goya Awards.

 

Event/ The screening of the short films will be followed by a post-screening discussion on women working in Spanish language filmmaking, with Carmen Herrero (MMU) and Abigail Loxham (University of Liverpool). This event is presented in partnership with the Instituto Cervantes Manchester.
