This raucously funny, odd couple film, the second feature from Spanish director Lucía Alemany, mines ample comedy from modern male perplexity at women’s break with traditional role models.
When the woman they both consider to be their wife falls into a coma, Emilio and Toni anxiously await her return to consciousness and find themselves embroiled in a fight to prove who is her one and only, true husband. As the two men square up, with pitch perfect use of the Western genre’s tropes, much of the comedy comes from Emilio and Toni’s contrasting personalities, playing to and against stereotypes – a gruff, down-to-earth, madrileño man (and involved parent), versus a polite, privileged man from Barcelona (who considers ‘returning’ his adopted Russian son). As the saloon doors swing open in the Pyrenean town, sit back and enjoy the ride!
