UK Premiere/ Heroico

Directed by David Zonana

This chilling and incisive social drama reveals the systemic violence rife in contemporary Mexico. Luis, an 18-year-old with indigenous roots, enters the army in the hope of ensuring a better future; and military medical insurance covers vital medication for his diabetic mother. At the Heroic Military College, he encounters a rigid and institutionally violent system designed to turn him into a perfect soldier.

Keen to tell the story from the perspective of the young recruits, David Zonana’s script is based on real stories from former cadets, and addresses them as people with families, ambitions, fears and the need to secure their wellbeing in an increasingly complex Mexico, where at the end of the day, the most obvious option for someone to escape  marginality and/or poverty, is through structures of violence; either institutional (as is the case of the army), or illegal (drug trafficking).
