This prize-winning portrait of Fernando Pacheco, a bullfighter from south-eastern Mexico, reveals a paradox. Charming, enthusiastic and skilful, he is an alcoholic whose life is infused with violence – both ‘at work’ and at home. His experiences may be seen as a reflection of the social pressures upon remote Mayan communities.
