The Young One

Directed by Luis Buñuel

An amoral parable of race, power and sexuality, this rarely seen Buñuel film is one of only two he made in English. In the American south, a black jazz musician (Hamilton) escaping a false rape charge lands on an island whose sole inhabitants are a bigoted gamekeeper (Scott) and his Lolita-esque teenage ward. How will they co-exist in their isolated world?

“The high contrast black and white photography, by Mexico’s greatest cinematographer, Gabriel Figueroa, gives the film a dreamlike, expressionist aura.” Dave Kehr, NY Times
