Despite its rather pulpy title, J. Lee Thompson’s film is a serious-minded exploration of the lives of a number of women who have found themselves in prison. Partly based on the experiences of writer Joan Henry, herself an ex-prisoner, The Weak and the Wicked showcases some of the best talents within British cinema of the time including actors Glynis Johns and Rachel Roberts and cinematographer Gilbert Taylor. But it is rising star Diana Dors who catches the eye as brash young Betty Brown.
