The Virgin Suicides

Directed by Sofia Coppola

In a conservative seventies middle American town 13-year-old Cecilia Lisbon attempts suicide. As a result, her already protective parents sequester the girl and her four blonde teenage sisters. But Mom & Dad hadn’t planned on the ingenuity of a group of teenage boys who plot to rescue the enigmatic quintet of beauties. The film is told from the viewpoint of these guys, with an eye and ear for the nuances of teenage life equal to that found in the source novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. Expertly scripted by its director, the film juxtaposes bright and blonde with more sinister events in an enjoyable mix of dark humour and tragedy.
