Marcos Arizmendi, a womaniser and boastful jai-alai player, falls victim to blackmail and agrees to lose a game, thus becoming a target of the gambling mafia. The villainous antihero of this tale, played by Armendáriz without his characteristic moustache, undergoes a long night of reckoning in which the cabaret, the fronton court and city nightlife all acquire an important leading role.
This is a classic of Gavaldón’s approach to the dramatic and visual tone of urban film noir, with Mexico City in full modernisation as a backdrop.
This screening follows a One Hour Intro to Mexican Golden Age Cinema, please note a separate ticket is required for the talk.
