The New Country

Directed by Geir Hansteen Jörgensen

Adapted by Lukas Moodysson from a television series that won a major European award for Best Multi-Cultural Programme, NEW COUNTRY is Jörgensen’s directorial feature début. In fear of deportation two refugees – one African, the other Iranian – run away from the ‘illegal alien’ detention centre where they met. When they meet an ex-beauty queen, she joins their flight. More than a road movie, THE NEW COUNTRY reveals the plight of the refugees with wit, warmth and lack of cliché, in an engaging exploration of immigration issues that echo across Europe.
