The Last Laugh

Directed by F.W. Murnau

Starring Jannings (of BLUE ANGEL fame) this classic silent is a tragic tale of an ageing hotel doorman who is humiliatingly stripped of his uniform and his self-identity when he is demoted to lavatory attendant. With hardly an intertitle, Murnau exploits the visual power of silent cinema to its fullest, employing extraordinarily inventive camera movements, lighting and framing. Dark ambient experimentalists Cipher (saxophonist/flautist Theo Travis & bassist/sound designer Dave Sturt) will perform live their specially commissioned score for the film. www.cipher.f9.co.uk Tickets: £6.00 full / £5.00 concs Cipher gratefully acknowledges financial assistance from Arts Council East Midlands
