Chris Marker’s fascination with the life and work of Russian film director Alexander Medvedkin (1900-1989) results in a deeply personal expedition into the history of 20th century communism, from its early avant-garde flourishes to its dispiriting and tragic demise. Bringing to light Medvedkin’s pioneering and long unrecognised work, the film prompts a reflection on the relation between art and politics in the former Soviet Union.
