The Killing of a Chinese Bookie

Directed by John Cassavetes

Despite the supremely suspenseful sounding title, this compelling noir is less a thriller than character study: Gazzara is brilliant as the charismatic LA strip-joint proprietor in debt to gangsters. Partly a self-portrait, the film oozes seedily seductive allure. This is the director’s own second, shorter cut.
