The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael

Directed by Thomas Clay

Along with BATTLE IN HEAVEN, this British directorial début was the most controversial film at Cannes, 2005.

GREAT ECSTASY… follows a seemingly quiet Margate teen who hangs around with the wrong crowd, is derailed by drugs and becomes an apostle of violence. Set against the background of the beginning of the Iraq War, the film slowly builds to a shocking finale that makes CLOCKWORK ORANGE’s rape scene look mild. The filmmakers claim the graphic violence is meant to shock us into acknowledging many similar acts inflicted during conflicts. See what you think.
