Debate still rages over which installment of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Mafia saga is the best. Part II is certainly the most complex and wide reaching. It is also a magnificent cinematic achievement in terms of its writing, direction and many exceptional performances, dominated by Al Pacino’s Don, a more malevolent figure than Marlon Brando’s. The film spans the expansion of Las Vegas, the Cuban Revolution and the US government’s investigation into organised crime and political corruption.
