One of the many films that Christopher Lee made for Hammer films with his Dracula director Terence Fisher, this rip-roaring adaptation of Dennis Wheatley’s Satanic thriller was supposedly the actor’s personal favourite.
Lee plays the Duc de Richleau, a learned take-charge aristocrat who uncovers some diabolical black-magic business in the home counties and sets out to beat the Devil.
Along with a compelling mystery plot that kicks in right from the start, Fisher’s film features several imaginatively staged supernatural set-pieces that are amongst the most memorable in the Hammer canon.
