Betty Comden was one of the screenwriters for this, the film that saw Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers re-united on screen after 10 years apart. As with many of the scripts that involved Comden, the story of The Barkleys of Broadway brings together a celebration of American popular forms, in particular the musical, and a critique of the potential snobbishness and elitism of European high-art, here represented by the world of dramatic theatre.

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
