The Banishment

Directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev

Director Zvyagintsev’s second film after the award winning THE RETURN, is characterised by the same stunning cinematography and atmospheric tension. Loosely based on The Laughing Matter by William Saroyan, it tells the story of Alex (Lavronenko), who leaves the confines of the city and moves his wife and two children to his birthplace in the countryside. This rustic idyll becomes the backdrop to misfortune and tragedy when a shocking announcement by his wife leaves Alex in turmoil. As his marriage unravels, Alex’s actions lead to tragedy, ruining the lives of his brother, wife and children.

Lavronenko’s performance as the brooding husband won him a Best Actor award at Cannes
