The Annihilation of Fish

Directed by Charles Burnett

Poinsetta and Fish are new neighbours – the two latest arrivals at Mrs. Muldroone’s Los Angeles boarding house, each coming to the City of Angels with their own particular baggage.

Poinsetta has escaped to LA following a break-up with her lover, the long-dead 19th century composer Puccini; and Fish has recently been released from an overcrowded mental institution despite his unresolved problems.

In the face of personal challenges, Poinsetta and Fish grow closer, drawn together as two outsiders discovering the joy of connection.

The Annihilation of Fish is a rare light-hearted work from Charles Burnett: a sweet and sincere comedy from the great American filmmaker most often noted for his hardnosed depictions of Black American life. Unavailable since its ill-fated festival debut in 1999, it has finally received a long-overdue reappraisal and a return to the big screen.

As part of Black History Month we are highlighting films that celebrate black history and culture.
