Teenage Kicks – The Undertones

Directed by Tom Collins

Led by loyal fan and supporter (and the man who launched their career) John Peel, this is an engaging documentary about the group of scruffy young Derry lads who, as the Undertones, crashed onto the punk scene in 1978 with the anthemic Teenage Kicks. The film mixes footage of gigs past and present, documentary images of 70s Derry, and contemporary interviews (including separate musings from ex-singer Feargal Sharkey) to great effect, reflecting journalist Eamon McCann’s observation that the group ‘sounded beautiful coming from an ugly place’.
