Made by the Nikkatsu studio and directed by Yasuharu Hasebe, Sex Hunter is one of the best entries in the Stray Cat Rock series of girl-gang exploitation films that hit Japanese cinemas in 1970.
In this contribution, the Alleycats, an all-girl gang, are in conflict with the male led Eagles. As with the best exploitation cinema the appeal of on-screen fighting, scenes in go-go bars, including an appearance by the popular pop band Golden Half, are present alongside a more thoughtful exploration of race, ethnicity and nationality.
Screening as part of Japan 2020: Over 100 years of Japanese Cinema, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network.
