Lizzy, a sculptor who pays the bills by working as an administrator at a local arts college, tries to balance her creative life with the daily dramas of family and friends – all while preparing to open a new exhibition.
Kelly Reichardt, one of cinema’s most astute chroniclers of American life, teams up with regular collaborator Michelle Williams once again for this typically low-key and warmly-observed comedy drama.
Despite never receiving an official UK release, Showing Up is another impressive entry in Reichardt’s remarkably consistent oeuvre. Its art school setting provides the perfect backdrop for a gently satirical look at art, craft and the administrative burdens of adulthood.
Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff screens on Sun 22 Sep, as part of our Women of the West season
