Saladin

Directed by Youssef Chahine

The Egyptian director Youssef Chahine produced his version of the Crusades in Nasser-era Egypt, creating a rare cinematic exploration from the east of a narrative usually viewed from the west.  The result has been called ‘cosmopolitan and humane’, offering a Middle Ages that serves as a model for the present.
