Iconoclastic director Cox returns to his Liverpool roots and to cinema screens with this version of Thomas Middleton’s 17th century play, reconstituted as a contemporary black comedy and recounted in original verse. A darkly funny meditation on love, family, and revenge, the story is set amidst the English aristocracy where the murderous Duke (Jacobi), Duchess (Quick) and their decadent sons enjoy wealth and power gained at the expense of Vindici (Eccleston) whose wife was murdered on their wedding day. His family has also suffered, so with the aid of his brother, Vindici returns to exact his revenge only to be distracted from his original intent.
