A belated follow-up to The Wizard of Oz that was based on two of Frank L. Baum’s later Oz books, it should be regarded as less a sequel to the 1939 classic and more as an affectionate homage. Directed by legendary editor and sound designer Walter Murch, the film finds Dorothy back in Oz where the yellow brick road is now reduced to rubble and the Emerald City now lays in ruins. Scored by David Shire and shot by David Watkin and an uncredited Freddie Francis, this is an incredibly ‘adult’ take on themes associated with childhood.
