A flamboyant visual and musical treat with some truly spectacular dancing, Yuli tells the rags-to-riches story of Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta. The film follows Acosta – nicknamed Yuli by his father – from growing up on the streets of Havana, through his time at the Cuban National Dance School, to performing at London’s prestigious Royal Ballet. Based on the 2007 memoir No Way Home, in Bollaín’s third collaboration with scriptwriter Paul Laverty the lead role is played by Olbera Núñez as a boy and Martínez as a young man, with Acosta also appearing in the film as himself. Focussing on Acosta’s difficult relationship with his domineering father, Yuli offers some fascinating insights into his life as well as a dazzling spectacle to enjoy.
