Pom Poko

Directed by Isao Takahata

DEFENDERS is an expansive account of the war between shape-changing racoon-dogs (tanuki) and human developers threatening their home. Takahata’s film draws on the vast body of tanuki folklore in Japan and wryly comments on the rise and fall of political activism, based on the director’s own leftist experience in the ‘60s.
