François Ozon offers a gender-reversed reworking of Werner Fassbinder’s 1972 classic The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, delivering a scathing and thoroughly enjoyable satire of celebrity, that serves as an indirect portrait of the troubled maestro himself. Astutely playing on Fassbinderian echoes, this superbly acted and executed version gets under the skin of the original to witty and moving effect. Isabelle Adjani gives a flamboyantly knowing diva turn, and Denis Ménochet excels in the titular role, in this brittle contemplation of the agonies of love and art.
