Two women meet in a hospital where they are about to give birth. Both are single and have become pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, has no regrets and is exultant. Ana, an adolescent, is scared and repentant.
Janis tries to encourage Ana as they move like sleepwalkers through the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between them – a bond, governed by chance, that will change their lives in unpredictable and decisive ways.
For his 22nd feature, veteran Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar returns to familiar themes of motherhood, memory and moral dilemmas. In Parallel Mothers, he has created yet another compelling drama, featuring a standout performance from his long-term collaborator Penélope Cruz.
